Nowadays, all Volvo passenger cars are electronically adjusted at a speed of 180 km/h, regardless of whether you go for an entry -level or a very thick motorized Volvo. Now that we are talking about thick motorized Volvo’s: in 2012 a Volvo with a Monsterdiesel broke a speed record twice. The Monsterdiesel in question: a 6.0-liter six-cylinder diesel with turbo. The Volvo: an L60G. But with a PCP addition.
Wait a minute, an L60G? Of course. No Volvo passenger car, but a real wheel loader, actually a big shovel. Of course you did not end up on Shovelweek, but we found the L60G and the record sprints made with it so remarkable that we did not want to remember them. The Volvo L60H was launched in 2012 together with the L70G and L90G and formed a new family with those two machines for the construction. That three of them are equipped with a seater diesel engine with turbo, a D6G Tier 4I machine that brought up 163 hp in the L60G. That made the L60G the least potente of the couple. What these six -cylinders really matter is of course a couple. Top speed is of no relevance. The record attempts made with the colossus are all the remarkable.
Technicians from Swecon – a supplier of agricultural machinery including those of Volvo Construction Equipment – collaborated with Bridgestone and the Bene Polestar Racing on an L60G that was aimed at the highest possible top speed. The result: the L60G Performance Concept Prototype (PCP). According to its creators, the L60G PCP was simply equipped with parts that you could pull out of the shelves of Volvo Construction Equipment. The axes were adjusted, the transmission revised and of course the diesel engine was also worked. The power was more than doubled, with the result that the shovel -washed shovel just brought in 340 hp.
On May 4, Volvo L60G PCP with driver Karin Olsson reached a top speed of 103 km/h behind the wheel. Very different from the 46 km/h that could achieve a normal version. But 103 km/h was not enough. The L60G PCP was taken back from the stable on 11 September. Olsson was allowed to make a new attempt on the Anderstorp Raceway in Småland in the south of Sweden. On the circuit – where planes can land! – The L60G PCP eventually achieved a speed of 120 km/h.
