Mandatory driving license inspection for ADHD will expire next April

Previously for autism

From 1 April next year, people with ADD or ADHD no longer have to undergo a mandatory medical inspection to get their driver’s license. After research, the Central Bureau Driving License (CBR) notes that those inspections are disproportionate.

Earlier this year, the cabinet announced that it would stop with compulsory inspections for people with autism.

A chamber majority asked the cabinet last year to abolish the medical examinations for ADD and ADHD, among other things. The then Minister Barry Madlener (Infrastructure, PVV) did not immediately participate because people with ADD and ADHD would be involved in accidents and violations more often than average. He asked the CBR for more research.

Almost all people with ADD or ADHD only are declared completely suitable for the first assessment, reports Madleners’ successor Robert Tieman (BBB) now based on the CBR study. In a letter to the House of Representatives, he writes: “Only one person was found completely unsuitable on the basis of Ad (H) d.” The medical examination is therefore “an unnecessary burden for both citizens and medical specialists”.

At the moment, after a psychosis, people have to wait at least six months and have a medical examination decreased before they can go behind the wheel again. Tiem wants to reduce that period to two months. The Health Council advised the medical specialist to determine a period.

Earlier, the plan was to have the changes start in January, but that will be a few months later. The CBR writes that time is needed to prepare everything.
