As radical as charming
Strange actually: the Italian Caselani has been making a furore with retro buses for years based on modern Citroën-business cars, but ignored the Italian brothers of those cars so far. So far, indeed, because the 616N changes it!
Do you know Carrozzeria Caselani? If we ask you so immediately, but there is a good chance that you have seen a product from the company ride. Since 2017, Caselani has developed a true retro version based on every Citroën business car and the AMI, all inspired by the striking and classic Hy ‘Ribbelbus’. The Jumper, Jumpy, Berlingo and Ami get around a different carriage that makes them clearly resemble that H (Y), but then of course while retaining the benefits of a modern bus.
The earlier Caselani based on the Citroën Jumper, in addition to his source of inspiration.
As usual in Bedrijfswagenland, those Citroën business cars of today all have a whole series of sister models. They are usually also there as Peugeot, Opel, Toyota and Fiat, where Fiat is actually the creator of the vehicle in the case of the Jumper/Ducato. From a technical point of view, it is of course no problem to screw the Caselani carriage on such a Ducato, but a bit weird is of course a retro-citroën on Fiat-Basis. All the more strange that the Italian Caselani never ventured into expansion for the other brands, but now it is Fiat’s turn.
The Fiat 616 from 1965 is the direct source of inspiration. Also note the flanks.
The 616N is in name and form a direct reference to light truck 616 from the 60s. It is perhaps less famous than Citroëns Ribbelbus, but with the 616-Ombouw the Ducato also suddenly looks very charming. Caselani works as usual rigorously and does not simply stick a bodykit at the Ducato, but replaces many body panels with its own making products. Front, ass and flank are tackled in this way, and the result may be there. Still? The conversion is of course suitable for almost every variant of the Ducato, so count that you will encounter this on food trucks and campers in the future.
Incidentally, a new Ducato is also a bit retro if you do not fold a Caselani carriage around it. Together with his sister models, this is the oldest vehicle that you can still buy new in Europe: the current model dates from 2006!
Both drastic and charming
Funny, Isn’t It: The Italian Caselani Has Been Causing A Furore for Years with Retro Buses Based on Modern Citroën Vans, But Has So Far Left the Italian Brothers of Those Cars to the Side. Until Now, Indeed, because the 616n Changes That!
