Stripe through new names Volvo
‘This is the Volvo S4’, we head in AutoWeek 36 of 1995. Not that it is certain cucumber time in terms of car news, so in the week of the IAA, but when leaving old car week (because we have been around 35 this year) our eyes fall on the announcement of Volvo’s middle class that we would get to know as S40. We had already forgotten that there are photos with the Badge S4 on the car. The new Sedan would be called S4, the station wagon F4. So that went a little differently.
In the article in the ‘Journaal’ as our news section was called in the days, we mainly zan about the imaginative of the name S4. We had been used to figures for Volvo’s for decades (which often had an idea behind). The photos of the sedan that Volvo slid into the world in those days clearly show the model name S4 under the right rear light. We do not yet know what the station wagon version looks like from the new model that will go into production in Born in Limburg, but what he will be called: F4. Both names were not in the car in the end.
Audi objected to the name S4, because they had that name in the early 90s on the fastest version of the Audi 100, and there was an S4 in the pipeline from the new A4. So Volvo had to change his name. That became S40, but that meant that the station wagon had to be called F40. And of course Ferrari didn’t like that. This is how the designation V40 was created, where the V would also become the naming for all future station wagons.
In the summer of 1995 we ticked quite a few pages full of Volvo, because a few weeks before we showed scope images of the C70 Coupé and Cabriolet, although we mentioned that when the photos appeared 850 Coupé and Cabriolet. In the article of the ‘S4’ announcement we already know a little more about the names, C7 would get the beauties on an 850-based designation! That also went differently to get the names in the pass with those of the S40/V40.
