The new BMW IX3 does ‘a Mercedesje’ with its roof – Back to Basics

BMW IX3 Back to Basics

Fair lighting optional

The new BMW IX3 is an awkward -going car for BMW, but on paper it all looks pretty good. For example, the price is pretty reasonable for this segment and the specifications, but what about the equipment?

BMW IX3 50 xDrive – € 70,501

We already know one thing: this article will be outdated soon. BMW only supplies the brand new IX3 as four -wheel drive and 469 hp 50 xDrive, and count that more modest versions will follow. However, because the car is super important for BMW for BMW, on a new platform and loosens the tongues, we are already treating it in this section.

It can be cheaper

Another good reason: in terms of equipment, a possible 30 or 40 version will probably not differ from the car shown here. After all, the basic version is the basic version, whatever drive you choose. As usual, the simplest version at BMW has no name and can be dressed with all kinds of (M) packages and options. The starting price of the 50 is officially € 70,501, but it can be a bit cheaper. The aforementioned price includes ‘Service Inclusive’ package and those who don’t want to receive a € 609 discount. Then it will be € 69,892, four years of free maintenance for those few hundred euros is definitely recommended.

It is always nice to see such a brand new car in the configurator for the first time, because that is how a completely different picture arises than on the slick press photos. This way you can see the IX3 here without M sports package, which means other bumpers, among other things. The M package brings with this newcomer remarkably few M-logos, and that is positive in our opinion. The basic color is in all cases the simple ‘alpinweiss’ and the IX3 is without an additional payment on five-spoke 20-inch light metal that is fully performed in silver. Striking: the optional ’20-inch Sterpaak Styling 1045 ‘seems the same wheel, but in a different color and with aerodynamic sets between the spokes. If we look closely at the car, it is striking that the extensive ‘fairground lighting’ of the press photos is missing. For example, the IX3 has no illuminated ‘grille’ as standard and the many vertical light elements are missing in the rear lights. It is all part of the ‘BMW iconic Glow Exterior Package’, which is screwed to your EV for € 1,133. LED headlights and LED tail lights are of course standard, and also look slick in standard form.

Even with the roof, something special is going on. The IX3 does not have a panoramic roof in standard shape, but it is visible where that (fixed) glass plate should be. BMW ‘sticks’ that gap simply with a piece of sheet metal, but the seam just above the windshield is always there. With that, BMW does a ‘mercedesje’ here, because that brand does something similar with, among other things, the C-Class.

The seam of the optional panoramic roof is always present.

Continue to the interior. A surprise awaits there, because instead of the obvious black, IX3 buyers without options get a cozy-looking seat cover in what BMW calls ‘Vivid Gray’. Two -tone light gray, in normal man -lying language. The dashboard is also gray, but a lot darker than the seats. The ‘Schuingetroked’ Infotainment screen is also standard in it, just like that stubborn screens series just below the windscreen and the steering wheel with a vertical spoke below and above the heart.

We also always find buttons for the chair adjustment, because every new IX3 has 6-time electrically adjustable front seats with memory. A rear seat folding in three parts is also standard and also entails an adjustment option. Furthermore, we note climatecontrol with two zones, all kinds of welcome and atmospheric lights, a ‘frunk’, an electric tailgate, rain and light sensors, ‘Keyless Entry’, automatic dimming mirrors, seat heating and cruise control. BMW even offers ‘Driving Assistant Plus’ in the Netherlands, with which adaptive cruise control also simply belongs.

The author’s choice

This makes the IX3 richer equipped a bit richer than we are used to from BMW and other German premium brands, although there is also much less to be personalized. I find out if I try to put together ‘my own’ IX3, and run out against the necessary limitations.

Incidentally, I do not rule out that I would actually go for a relatively modest IX3 if I had this budget and that options. I am now a bit tired of all that M-overaad and would like to distinguish myself with a more modest and tastier-decorated car, all of which are of course inevitable. That starts with a color, of which BMW offers little sad. Those who do not want black, white or gray only have ‘Ocean Wave Blue’ as an option (€ 1,025), so we will do that until the IX3 is also allowed to go to the individual colors. The standard wheels are not the most beautiful, but I like completely silver -colored wheels and finds smaller often better, especially with an EV. So they can stay. The steering wheel heating is going on for € 288. Tinking an extensive mood lighting package automatically brings an interior upgrade, but that ‘Castanea Bicolor’ (brown) gives it some cold interior a bit cozy and is actually very beautiful. Costs: € 1,153. I also think Harman Kardon-Audio is worth something, although it is a shame that you immediately have to choose an Innovation Pack with extra climate zone and a head-up display. Costs € 1,994, but it is no different. I would also like light instead of black sky cladding, but unfortunately that is not possible. The panoramic roof is slightly tempting, but it cannot open and so BMW can keep it. It remains with a total of € 74,961.
