So still a touareg
It is no secret that Volkswagen works on a new ‘Electric First’ platform, the SSP base. It is surprising that the first Volkswagen on that platform is said to be an electric Volkswagen Id Touareg, so a large SUV.
We now hear about that electric id touareg for the first time thanks to Automobilwoche. That German medium (beautiful name by the way) knows that there will be an electric successor somewhere around 2029 for the large Touareg, a car that should logically be called ID Touareg according to the new names policy. This touareg is now mentioned as the first Volkswagen on the new SSP platform. That is not because he comes earlier, but because the electric ID Golf and his high -legged brother have been postponed to (probably) 2030.
The electric touareg will of course not be completely on its own, but also does not share its basis with the Porsche Cayenne. That is a trend break with earlier touaregs, but Porsches electric Cayenne will soon be ‘just’ on the PPE basis that is also used for the electric Macan and Audi Q6. The Touareg does get American brothers, because Volkswagens American subsidiary brand Scout is said to build its own SUV on the same basis. It will then be probably for the rest of the world for the American market, the Touareg. Unlike you might expect, the current Touareg is also not available in North America. They have the Atlas, a somewhat larger but less high positioned SUV called Teramont in China.
The SSP platform is an electric basis, but leaves room for so-called range extenders. Even if the drive of the wheels is always technically speaking electrically, the power for that drive can therefore be generated by a (small) combustion engine.
So a touareg after all
