Nissan to the Lidar with a new generation of propilot

Next phase

Nissan has been making a furore with Propilot since 2018, a package of driving assistance systems that, among other things, have the car steer and slow. Now ProPilot is entering the next phase, and Nissan also seems to want to use Lidars for that.

We tried the Propilot system for the first time in a Qashqai in 2018, but has since been in almost every Nissan. Although Nissan is still doing his best to generate attention with that catchy name and a blue button, nowadays Propilot is also ‘just’ one of the many package names for driving assistance systems that in principle every car manufacturer has in-house nowadays.

Nissan may therefore want to take the next step in this area, and is now announcing the next generation of propilot. That system must be available in Japan from model year 2027 and will undoubtedly also come to our regions afterwards. Nissan is not yet in detail, but already promises that Propilot will use AI from Wayve, which specializes in automated driving.

Nissan also speaks of Lidars, so don’t look crazy if a Nissan will soon have a striking ‘pimple’ above the windshield just like a Volvo or a Nio. In that pimple there is a combination of mirrors and lasers that can measure distance to objects if the light is too limited or the distance is too large for a camera, so the idea is already good. In addition to that Lidar, the prototypes of Nissan also have 5 radars and 11 cameras, the majority of which are on and around the front of the car.
