Peugeot 107: ‘A great first car for little money’

Twenty years ago, the Peugeot 107 first appeared on the road. We are now 20 years further, but you still encounter this model daily. Logical, because it was sold in large numbers and is still a popular used car.

Why would you choose a Peugeot 107?

Imagine: a car that not only saves your wallet at purchase but also remains friendly to your bank account while driving. You can pick up an early Peugeot 107 not only cheaply, but the monthly expenses also remain relatively low. Thanks to its low weight, the costs for insurance and motor vehicle tax are limited. And refueling? You hardly need to worry about that, because you easily drive 20 kilometers on every liter of euro 95 you put in.

About this car

Today we are driving an early version of the Peugeot 107, one from before the first facelift. Under the hood, you’ll find the proven 1-liter petrol engine with 68 hp. This doesn’t make the 107 a racing monster, but the engine is reliable. In this model, we enjoy several options. Air conditioning, electric windows, and even a tachometer are included – all nice extras that you don’t find standard on every 107.

Points of attention

The 107 is prone to water leakage; feel if the mats are dry and check if there are no moisture rings in the seats. Rust formation in the interior light may indicate that water is seeing in through the antenna. The clutch is also a point of attention. Because many 107s only drive in and around the city, it takes a heavy toll. More importantly, this model has a manually adjustable clutch cable. This adjustment is often forgotten, causing the clutch to wear out faster. It’s a simple job when the car is on the lift, so take it with you on your next garage visit – then you’ll enjoy the clutch much longer. Finally: keep a close eye on the oil level, especially in models with higher mileage. The Peugeot 107 sometimes consumes some oil, so regular checking prevents problems.

Availability and prices

Two decades after its introduction, the Peugeot 107 is still popular, but fortunately, there is plenty of choice on the used car market. There are enough models for sale, so the chance is considerable that you will find one that fits your wishes fairly quickly. You can get into a 107 starting from around €1,000, but the price increases quite quickly as the model year is more recent, the mileage is lower, or if there are additional options. The overall condition and maintenance history also play a major role in the price.

The Peugeot 107 is proof that cheap, reliable, and economical driving go well together.
