Toyota made us excited with an MR2-like concept car more than two years ago, but since then there has been no concrete sign of life from it. Until now.
In the autumn of 2023, Toyota presented us with a wonderfully sporty concept model: the FT-SE. A fully electric two-seater, which, despite its powertrain, could still be seen somewhat as a spiritual successor to the Toyota MR2. That too was a relatively compact sporty two-seater, but it simply had an internal combustion engine. It was mid-mounted, and we’ve only recently seen that in a unique GR Yaris at Toyota. Now, however, something more concrete is in the pipeline, and then we also look back at the FT-SE.
In an interview with Automotive News , Gazoo Racing chief Tomoya Takahashi states that a sporty production car with a mid-mounted engine is being worked on. He does not yet have details, but he warns that it will still take some time before the car is ready. According to current planning, it would take another four or five years. For clarity, this concerns a combustion engine car, while the FT-SE was an electric car. Don’t be surprised if Toyota still pulls that design off the shelf. Perhaps with some modernizations here and there, because it still needs to look fresh in 2030.
