Model Y Still Number 1 ‘YTD’
Tesla’s sales figures are still not significantly improving, and so in April, the Volkswagen Group can once again call itself the EV king of the European automotive market.
This is according to preliminary monthly figures from Dataforce, which already concludes that the Skoda Elroq, with 8,070 units, was the most popular EV in Europe in April 2025. The Volkswagen ID3 is in 2nd place with 6,937 units. It is striking that not the ID4, but the ID7 from Volkswagen is in 3rd place with 6,783 registrations, followed by the ID4 with 6,300. Automotive News rightly points out that the success of the ID models is undoubtedly largely due to the hefty discounts that Volkswagen gives on these models, but still.
The Tesla Model Y drops to ninth place in April, and for the second time in April, Tesla must conclude that it is not the largest supplier of EVs to European customers. The Model Y’s dominance in previous months is still evident from the fact that the Model Y is still comfortably in 1st place over the first four months of 2025 combined. However, while sales of this model fell by 48.4 percent over those four months, the Volkswagen ID4 (in 2nd place over 4 months) gained 71.2 percent.
Speaking of those first four months: in the period January to April 2025, EV sales in Europe increased by a significant 28 percent in total. Automotive News attributes this to the fact that car manufacturers have to sell electric cars to keep their CO2 fleet average below the critical limit, with discounts like those from Volkswagen as a result.
