The sales of new Teslas in France fell by 67 percent in May to just 721 electric cars compared to a year earlier. According to the French automotive industry organization Plateforme Automobile, that is the lowest level in almost three years.

Over the first five months of this year, French sales of Tesla plummeted by 47 percent to 8,277 vehicles. France is the largest market in the European Union for electric vehicles after Germany.

Tesla’s sales have also fallen sharply in many other countries, including the Netherlands. Dutch Tesla sales halved in the first five months of this year to 4,880 cars compared to a year earlier.

The brand is facing fierce competition from cheaper Chinese cars and criticism of Tesla CEO Elon Musk over his work for American President Donald Trump, among other things. Musk has now resigned from this job to focus on his companies again.
