Now in Production
Anyone applying for a new driver’s license will soon receive a different card than before. The RDW reports that the new driver’s license has gone into production as of the new month.
It’s not as big a step as the transition from the pink paper to the pink card, but still: there is a new driver’s license in circulation. The new Dutch driver’s license still looks quite similar to the previous one. The essential changes are therefore not all directly visible to the naked eye. There are more ‘authenticity features’ than before, to prevent counterfeiting.
Such characteristics can only be seen when you put a UV lamp on them. “There are more of them and we have applied new technologies,” says project manager Bas Berkhout. “For example, you can see part of the antenna of the chip in the transparent part of the driver’s license. Not everything is visible to the naked eye. On the front and back you can see illustrations of, for example, a street network or a traffic light with a UV lamp.”
In conversation with De Telegraaf, the RDW explains that the new card will be rolled out in a few days. So you may not be able to strike immediately if you would like the new driver’s license right away. The costs for a new driver’s license remain the same. Anyone who no longer wants a card at all will soon have enough with the upcoming digital driver’s license, although the card will then also continue to exist as an alternative.
