Final mood will follow
The French parliament has agreed to a bill that puts an end to the low emission zones in French cities. The environmental zones are not immediately lifted.
The low emission zones are areas in cities where vehicles that pollute too much are no longer welcome. These zones have been introduced since 2019 in various large cities, such as Paris, Lyon and Marseille.
In a French low emission zone, your car must be provided with a crit’air vignette: a sticker that indicates how much pollution your vehicle emissions. Cars get a score of 0 (electric) to 5 (most polluting). Older diesel cars (Crit’air 4 or 5) were no longer allowed to enter some cities on workdays.
Not immediately abolition
The mood does not mean that the low emission zones disappear immediately. A final vote about the entire bill must follow. How much time this process takes is not clear. Until that time, the current rules will continue to apply.
Dutch motorists who travel to France by car must therefore still have a valid crit’air sticker on their windshield if they drive through a low emission zone. This remains mandatory until the law has been fully approved and enters into force.
Although most holiday destinations can be reached without encountering an environmental zone, the chance that you accidentally enter one is not inconceivable. In that case, in the event of a violation, you will still run the risk of a fine of at least 68 euros.
More and more criticism
France wants to delete the low emission zones because there was more and more criticism of the system. According to opponents, the low emission zones are socially unfair, because people with a lower income are often unable to afford a new, less polluting car. The administrative system with the vignettes as a complex and impractical was also experienced by many French people.
For those who travel to France by car this summer
– Check whether your destination is located or behind a low emission zone
– If necessary, order your Crit’Air vignette on time (only via the official website of the French government)
– Be alert to local traffic signs that indicate low emission zones
You can find all the zones and cities through this site.
