Ver-Damd
Let the Japanese take an existing, modern car model and give it a classic, often American nose. The latest addition to this category is the Reverb from Damd, an old acquaintance.
Mitsuoka is the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to existing car models in Japan that are equipped with hilariously misplaced retro elements. The Viewt, based on the Jaguar MK2 (optically), is probably the best-known example, but more recently Mitsuoka also came up with the Buddy. That is a Toyota RAV4, but with a nose that strongly resembles that of a classic Chevrolet Suburban or pick-up.
Damd certainly belongs in this list too. This at least as stubborn Japanese company has in the past conjured up all kinds of gems on our screen, from the Lapin – a retro-R4 before that was cool – to a Jimny with the appearance of a Delta Integrale. Really.
Now the company comes with something new, the Reverb. The basis is formed by a Honda WR-V, a small cross-over that is also sold as Elevate in Asia. This car also gets a complete makeover, especially at the front, with the result being a nose that strongly resembles Jeeps (Cherokee XJ?). Chunky, square and tough, so completely eighties.
What is funny is the way in which the square nose is forged behind the headlights to the streamlined body, because the ‘intermediate piece’ is clearly visible there. Black steel wheels, off-road tires, striking colors and striping complete the picture, although the rear of the car is left behind in this metamorphosis.
