Exciting car trips
You never forget your first love. That is why we look back on their first car together with enthusiastic car owners. Young and craving for adventure, Ron and Esther Philips went on holiday to the Soviet Union with their Toyota Corolla Hardtop Coupé twice.
Ron, you were on vacation in Spain and then decided that you wanted a Toyota?
“A friend of mine had a Toyota 1000 and with that we went on vacation to Spain in 1977. We were young and his driving style was quite enthusiastic. He pulled on for a nice long time in the gears and the pace was good, but that little cup was not to break. The car left a indestructible impression and I decided that I also wanted a Toyota. Hardtop Coupé was very nicely included.
In 1984 you made the long journey to the Soviet Union together with Esther. That sounds like an exciting boy’s book.
“We were young and idealistic. The communist Eastern bloc sounded like a completely different world and we wanted to experience that. Our parents found the idea but nothing and thought they would never see us again. Esther was only 19 years old and I was 25, but they couldn’t stop us. The car got a turn and with a stitch keot set in the suitcase.”
That sounds simple, but that journey must need some preparation.
“You not only had to have all your documents in order, but also to submit your complete travelogue to the Russians. They wanted to know exactly which route we were going to drive and in which hotels we slept. At the border crossing to the Soviet Union we had to drive through a container of water, after which they checked the bottom with mirrors. Then they had a few magazines empty, even our cassetta, even mad. And there were some bare women.
Due to a flat tire, the rust played troubling?
“My father always said about this car that you only had to give it a staircase and he already started to walk. The technique was simple and trouble-free, but the rust was really one thing. The trunk leaked so badly that you could skate in the winter’s day and when we wanted to change a leaky tire in the Soviet Union, the car saw the cricky. lifted so that I could still change the band.
During your second trip to the Soviet Union you got a collision. Was it the end of exercise then?
“At the border crossing in Sopron, a West German coach met us whose driver became unwell. The bus ended up on our roads and hit the row of cars that stood in front of us. A domino effect was created so the car bumped into us and we bumped into the beetle that stood in front of us. I still see that man picking up his window, pushing back and driving back.
