In Audi history, the Audi A2 is a strange Snuiter in the most positive sense of the word. In the year in which it was 20 years ago that the quirky Midi-MPV was out of production, we can show you photos of the car that translates the A2 to the present. Is this the Audi A2 e-tron?
The Audi A2, you have to love it. What started in 1997 during the IAA van Frankfurt with an Al2-called study model, led to the introduction of a compact MPV-like in 1999 with a lightweight bodywork thanks to the application of aluminum. The only 3.83 meter short A2 was of course a strange duck within the Audi family, but one that managed to get their hands on top of each other. Although there were plenty of people who did not think the A2 fits Audi, or simply did not like the stubborn model. 20 years after the Audi A2 came out of production, we can show you the first photos of what is perhaps his successor.
The design influences of this real A2 are particularly evident at the rear of the Audi A2 e-tron.
Although, in a certain sense you can see the A1 introduced in 2010 as the successor to the A2, after all, that too was a compact Audi on a platform that was used for a B-segmenter by other brands of the Volkswagen Group. Anyway: design references to the A2 of yesteryear did not get the A1, the Q2, who was later marketed, did not get. On the packed Audi on these photos we clearly see small visual hommages on the A2. Take a look at the somewhat sloping roof line that overflows into a spoiler positioned by a high in the butt in a ‘horizontal’ and vertical part split rear window. The MPV -like A -Style – which creates an extra side window, is also a nod to the A2 of yesteryear. The interpretation of the rear light units in particular is clearly not yet final.
For the time being we dare to name the car in the photos Audi A2 e-tron. Indeed: e-tron and therefore completely electric. It seems to be a relatively compact electric cross-over, possibly one that, just like cars such as the Volkswagen ID Polo, the cross-over alternative and cars such as the Skoda Epiq and Cupra Raval will be on the Meb Entry platform. That means that the Audi A2 e-tron in the base becomes a front-wheel drive, although there are probably also versions with four-wheel drive.
The Audi A2 e-tron undoubtedly serves as the successor to the Audi Q2. That cross-over was introduced in 2016. Sister model Volkswagen T-Roc recently received a direct successor, but that does not seem to be ahead of the Q2. Indirectly, since this A2 e-tron will jump into the hole that leaves the Q2 behind. Fun fact: Audi was already looking ahead to a new electric A2 in 2011. So it has never come to date. In October 2024, Audi squeezed some new design elements in a so-called Restomod of an OER-A2.
