Also bigger in the United Kingdom

BYD’s sales in Germany more than tenfold last month to 2629 units. That is more than double compared to Tesla’s sales, it was announced on Wednesday.

BYD is thereby increasing its lead over Tesla, after already overtaking its American rival last year in Germany and the United Kingdom. Chinese brands such as MG, Leapmotor, and Xpeng have been expanding their activities in Europe for months, amidst a fierce price war in their home market.

In the Netherlands, BYD sold 368 new cars in January, more than half more compared to the same month last year. Tesla’s sales plummeted from almost 1000 cars in January last year to 307 units. Tesla is struggling with disappointing results across Europe, partly due to criticism of CEO Elon Musk’s political activities.
