The Cupra Formentor, besides the Audi RS3, was the only Volkswagen Group car with a five-cylinder engine. Was and is, because it returns!
Those who are crazy about five-cylinder engines could, for years, indulge themselves with Audi, among others. Still can, but then you only have one option: the Audi RS3. Within the Volkswagen Group, however, there was a time when another brand spooned the same 2.5 TSI into one of its cars: Cupra. With the Cupra Formentor VZ5, it had a wonderfully sporty car, which unfortunately passed by our Dutch noses. In 2024, it was discontinued, but now the VZ5 is back!
Like a bolt from the blue, Cupra announces that the VZ5 is back in, albeit limited, production. There will only be 4,000 of them, so don’t count on seeing it on the price list here anytime soon. The return is therefore quite bittersweet. Again, the five-cylinder delivers 390 hp and 480 Nm and, of course, a wonderful rumble from the exhaust. Shifting is done with a seven-speed DSG, and the power is distributed over all four wheels. Production will begin in Barcelona in the first quarter of the new year.
