Dieselgate: Exactly 10 years ago, Volkswagen was caught cheating

And many would follow

Exactly ten years ago, a not so striking ANP message appeared on the site. Volkswagen is said to have been sued in the US for tampering with emission-related systems, but no one could still know how gigantically this dieselgate file would run out of the claws.

‘Environment against Volkswagen in the US’, was the title of a short news article that appeared on 19 September 2025 at 8.41 am – exactly ten years before the appearance of this new article – on AutoWeek.nl. Volkswagen should recall hundreds of thousands of cars in the US for circumventing climate protection measures, which was classified by environmental service EPA as ‘illegal and a threat to public health’. Seriously was of course, but for Europeans also a far-from-us-bed show at the time.

‘Auw’

The first reaction under the message was simply ‘Auw …’. Reader ‘Roskampies’ had seen that well, because it was indeed very painful for Volkswagen. This first article is now the last in a file that consists of 46 pages of news items, in total good for 413 pieces. The word ‘tampering’ already fell in the second article (of 20 September) and already on September 22 ‘Dieselgate’ made it to the head of a news item, after which the misery expanded as an oil slick and we (that is rare) installed a special file to bundle all the news reports on this theme.

Ten years later, that file is still being supplemented, because last week it turned out that Dutch ‘tamper diesel drivers’ also qualify for compensation. Although a decade has passed since the first misery emerged, ‘Dieselgate’ is still fresh in the memory with many of us. It is therefore unprecedented how great the impact of this file is on the Volkswagen Group and even other manufacturers. Volkswagen spent dozens of billions on compensation measures worldwide, various top managers even saw imprisonment, received a temporary prohibition of sale here and there and ran a bowl of image damage in which even Fords Pinto debacle from the 1970s were still fading.

Denial

It is painful to read that on September 22, 2015, Volkswagen still denied that diesels were sold in Europe that has been tampered with. A few days later it turned out that it was wrong. Although ‘dieselgate’ and ‘tamper software’ also refer to similar tampering among other car builders, the core of the problem still depends on what was discovered in 2015. Volkswagen developed and used deliberate software that was intended to remove emission tests to the garden, so that they (in particular) diesel engines emit considerably less NOX during such a test than in practice.

In the US, TDIs were promoted as ‘Clean Diesel’, afterwards extra painful

Implications

What has Dieselgate left us for ten years? That is perhaps more a question for a later, more extensive analysis, although there is something to be said about it. For example, the tampering has undoubtedly caused a lot of damage to the image of diesel and speeded up the decline of diesel as a passenger car fuel. Although diesels are available to this day in European countries in particular, the offer is just a fraction of what it once was. The fact that diesels are under a magnifying glass with all kinds of governments and are known as ‘dirty’, of course also helps (not).

We can also quietly state that on the other hand Dieselgate contributed to the electrification of the fleet in both the US and Europe, if only because Volkswagen had to invest heavily in, for example, fast -charging networks on both sides of the ocean. An event with a lasting impact, even now that the start of the misery has been behind us for ten years.

And many more would follow
