Not Just Any Golf
Over the years, some more impressive-looking Volkswagens have appeared, but they were never as fast as the current Volkswagen Golf. At least, never before has a production model been so fast on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.
You can have a really fast car in a Volkswagen Golf, but you never really exude anything sporty very emphatically with it. At least, not like you would with a fast coupe, for example. Even if you have a sporty Golf, it still looks relatively modest. That also applies to the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50, but it is the fastest production Volkswagen ever on the famous Nordschleife.
The Golf GTI Edition 50 completed the more than 20 km long circuit in just over 7 minutes and 46 seconds. Behind the wheel of the special Golf was driver Benny Leuchter, who emphasizes that he did his lap with a car as it will actually be for sale later. Later this week, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 will be unveiled in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Golf GTI. In essence, it is just a Golf GTI and not even the even more intense R.
Leuchter says he never expected to ever shoot over the Ring faster with a front-wheel drive Golf than with a Golf R. Volkswagen already indicates that the GTI Edition 50 optionally has, among other things, an adapted chassis, lighter wheels and special racing tires. Apparently, that makes an important difference. Volkswagen will reveal all the information on Friday.
