Many Model Series

BMW is recalling hundreds of thousands of cars worldwide to garages due to potential fire risk. In the Netherlands, this concerns 5,500 cars. “Owners will be contacted as soon as possible to rectify the problem,” says Bryan Barendrecht, spokesperson for BMW Netherlands.
The recall affects the 2 Series Coupé, various variants of the 3, 4, 5, and 7 Series, the 6 Series Gran Turismo, the two-seater open sports car Z4, and also the SUVs X4, X5, X6, and Z4. It concerns cars produced between July 2020 and July 2022.
According to BMW, these vehicles may experience increased wear on the solenoid switch. This can make the car harder to start and, in some cases, prevent it from starting at all. Furthermore, a short circuit cannot be ruled out, which in turn can lead to overheating of the starter motor. “In the worst case, this leads to a fire in the vehicle while driving. In that case, smoke may be seen or smelled while driving or when leaving the vehicle,” states the car manufacturer. BMW therefore advises not to leave the vehicle unattended with the engine running.
Previous Issues
German media report that a total of 575,000 vehicles are involved, but BMW does not want to confirm that figure. Affected customers are allowed to continue using their cars for now. These concerns cars whose chassis number contains the following digits: 0012650600 , 0012660600 , 0012670600 and 0012680600 .
Last autumn, BMW already recalled hundreds of thousands of cars because a starting problem could lead to fire in the worst-case scenario. Back then, it was not about wear and tear, but about water that could enter the starter motor and cause corrosion. In that instance, a short circuit and, in the worst case, fire were also possible.
