Ford Mustang specialist makes replica of old Boss 429

(Revved Up) Pony

Ford Mustang Boss 429 replica

There have been several fast versions of the first generation Ford Mustang, including the Boss 429 from 1969. A replica of this has now been made.

Boss? Is this Bruce ‘The Boss’ Springsteen’s new fun car? No, this Boss 429 was produced in 1969 and 1970 as an extra sporty version of the first Ford Mustang. The number 429 in the name refers to the number of cubic inches in the engine, as the Americans call the cylinder capacity. The intention was to participate in NASCAR races with this car, but that didn’t happen. Besides the Boss 429, there was also the Mustang Mach-1, on which the name of the electric Mustang Mach-E from 2020 was based.

Back to the replica. Revology Cars, based in Orlando (Florida), which makes replicas of almost all variants of the first Mustang, has given the car a technical upgrade. Originally, there was a V8 with seven liters of displacement in the Boss 429 that delivered 381 hp. The ‘new’ one has a smaller block with a lot more power: the 5.0 liter V8 ‘Coyote’ from the 2023 Mustang GT, the seventh generation of the pony car, tuned up to 720 hp.

The replica of the Ford Mustang Boss 429 houses a 5.0 V8 Coyote, in this case good for 720 hp.

Does it stop there? Well no, the body is completely new and there is a more modern aluminum subframe underneath. The steering wheel was redesigned and a six-speed manual gearbox was installed. A ten-speed automatic is also available. What does this replica cost, you ask? A not insignificant $395,000 (€341,123) to be precise. This makes the replica of the Boss 429 in the US almost a ton more expensive than the new Ford Mustang GTD with 800 hp.
