Investigation into self-driving Teslas in the US after accidents

The American traffic regulator NHTSA is opening an investigation into 2.9 million Teslas. The cars are equipped with a feature that allows the vehicles to drive themselves. However, the watchdog has received reports that the self-driving Teslas are committing traffic violations, resulting in accidents and injuries.

The NHTSA states that the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system “causes driving behavior that is inconsistent with traffic safety laws.” The regulator received six reports of Teslas running red lights, resulting in a collision. In four of these accidents, one or more people were injured.

According to Tesla’s website, FSD is currently available in several countries, including the United States, Canada, China and Australia. The system is said to help drivers “drive better by performing the most common and error-prone driving tasks”.
