The Tesla Model Y was the most popular new car in September, Toyota the Most Registered New Brand. But, what about the first three quarters of this year? Very Different! Kia is by far the absolute Ruler of the Dutch Car Market.
Recently, we wrote extensively about the ‘sales figures’ for September. The registration figures for September showed that it was only the second time this year that kia was not the most popular brand in the Netherlands. Toyota took the lead in September. The most popular new car in the Netherlands was the Tesla Model Y. This time, We are lumping together the registration figures for the first three quarters of this year to get a picture of which brands and models are performing best in 2025 so far. What Emerges: Kia Seems Unbeatable.
Most Popular Brands in the Netherlands-January-September (Q1-Q3) 2025
In The Period January-September, No Less than 28,733 New Kias Were Registered in The Netherlands. More than one in Ten New Cars in the Netherlands is a Kia. This makes Kia the most popular brand in the Netherlands so far this year, and it seems that no other brand will take take that title from the koreans. The Difference with the Number Two is significant. That is Toyota with 20,026 registrations. Kia Saw Its Registrations Increase by A Hand 5 percent In the First Nine Months of This Year, While Toyota’s Registrations Are Currently 12 percent behind year.
Volkswagen is Going Like A Rocket. It Saw Its Registrations Increase by about Twenty percent in the First Three Quarters of This Year Compared to the Same Period Last Year. With 19.842 Registered New Cars, The Brand Claims the Third Spot. Skoda is also Climbing Strongly – thanks in part to the Elroq – and has already registered about 18 percent more cars in the first three quarters of this year than in the same period last year. The Top Five is Rounded Off by BMW, which Delivered Slightly More New Cars Than In The First Three Quarters Of 2024.
Notable growers in the top 15: Renault (+28 percent), Ford (+26 percent), Opel (+19 percent) and Citroën (+73 percent!). Renault Owes Part of Its Growth to the Electric Renault 5. Ford can Count itself Rich with the Kuga, While Opel Can Thank The Corsa and Frontera, Among Others, and Citroën the C3 and C3 Aircross. We Cannot Ignore Tesla. Despite Regularly Appearing in Top List Again, Sales this year are significant bewind compared to last year. So far in 2025, 10.109 New Teslas Have Been Registered, about 50 percent less than in the same period last year.

Most Popular Models In The Netherlands-January-September (Q1-Q3) 2025
We are not just saying that kia seems unbeatable. The Electric Kia EV3 is not only the most registered new EV in the Netherlands, but also the most popular new car regardless of the type of powertrain. Almost 8,000 Kia EV3S Have Already Been Registered in The Netherlands. To put that into perspective: More EV3S have already leg registered this year than Opels. A Kia is also in Second Place: The Old but not to be dismissed picanto. In The First Three Quarters of This Year, Almost a Quarter More Kia Picantos Have Been Registered than in the same period Last year. The Tesla Model Y is in Third Place over the First Three Quarters of This Year and is Therefore The Most Popular New Electric Car in the Netherlands After the Kia EV3. 5,983 Tesla Model ys have leg registered this year. That is a whopping 52.2 percent less than in the same period last year.
Not Entirely Surprisingly, We also find the Skoda Elroq High In The List. The Relatively Compact Electric Skoda is in Fourth Place and Is Therefore in Third Place in The List of Most Popular Electric Cars. The Kia Niro Still Manages to Grab A Fifth Place, Althegh the Registration Figures for that Car Fell Sharply Compared to Last Year. The Success of the Kia EV3 undoubtedly had an influence on that. Furthermore, Interestingly: The Ford Kuga is Going Like the ProSverbial Fire Brigade Despite its relatively old age and is the most popular new plug-in hybrid in the Netherlands. The Arrival of the New Generation Kodiaq is Doing The Model Well, The Skoda SUV is up Almost 122 percent. The Same Goes for the Volkswagen Tiguan. Of these, 149.3 percent more have leg registered this year. Not Entirely Surprising, The C3 is The Fastest Grower at Citroën.
