Kia is number one in the Netherlands, Skoda has the best-selling model, but another brand is number two

Two Teslas in Top 5 EVs

This year, 388,024 new passenger cars were registered. This means the Dutch car market remained largely stable in 2025. According to official figures from RAI Vereniging, BOVAG, and RDC, this represents a slight increase of 1.7 percent compared to 2024. December, in particular, provided a strong final spurt: in that month, 48,585 new cars were registered, a growth of 31.9 percent compared to December last year. This brought the total above the earlier forecast of 367,000 units. Kia is number one in the Netherlands, Skoda has the best-selling model, but another brand is second overall!

The shift towards (partially) electric powertrains continued strongly in 2025. Hybrids were the most popular choice this year with 175,779 registrations and a market share of 45.3 percent, followed by fully electric cars ( 1 56,139 registrations, 40.2 percent market share). Traditional petrol models (there are now very few internal combustion engines without any form of electrification) again lost ground, reaching a 13.1 percent market share, while diesel and LPG further marginalized.

Market Share per Powertrain (2025)

In the top 5 best-selling brands, Kia clearly won, with almost 6,000 more cars sold than number two Volkswagen. Numbers three and four, Skoda and Toyota, are close to each other. For Skoda, it was naturally the Elroq that led the way. The Enyaq-derived EV is the best-selling car in the Netherlands in 2025. Toyota sees the Aygo X in fifth place in the model ranking. These are mainly still Aygo’s with only the petrol engine because the Aygo X Hybrid, the fully hybrid A-segmenter, has only just appeared in showrooms. Furthermore, it is striking that Volkswagen has not broken into the top five with any model, neither in the overall list nor in that of EVs. However, the brand did finish in second place with almost 32,000 registrations.

Forecast 2026: Slight Decrease Expected

For 2026, BOVAG and RAI Association expect a total sale of 361,000 new passenger cars and 40,000 light commercial vehicles. This keeps the market at a similar level until 2025, although the total is still below the long-term average of over 410,000 registrations per year.
