Mercedes-Benz recalls around 223,000 delivery vans worldwide due to potentially broken airbags. This is evident from a report published in the KBA database, the German government service for road traffic. How many vehicles are involved in the Netherlands is not yet known.
The recall relates to the Viano and Vito models produced between December 2002 and February 2006. A Mercedes-Benz spokeswoman says that in the past, when replacing airbags, for some vehicles possible modules may have been used from Takata, the Japanese manufacturer that is associated with widespread airbag defects. The airbags in question can explode through a production error, where metal particles fly through the car. Several drivers worldwide have already died.
The car owners concerned will be informed in writing via the company’s dealer network, according to the spokeswoman. Mercedes-Benz will inspect the airbags and replace it for free if necessary. Throughout Germany it is possible 60,245 vehicles, reports business magazine Focus. How many vehicles are involved in the Netherlands is not yet known.
