Number of car thefts will increase by almost a quarter in 2025

Toyota RAV4 PHEV

A 24.5 percent increase

In 2025, 7,430 cars were stolen. This is a significant increase compared to 2024, when ‘only’ 5,969 cars were stolen.

Especially in the first nine months of 2025, significantly more cars were stolen than in the previous year, according to figures from the Vehicle Crime Insurance Bureau Foundation (VbV). In October, November, and December, however, fewer cars were stolen than in the same period in 2024.

The Toyota RAV4 remains the most popular car among thieves. According to Toyota, since some software adjustments made earlier this year, RAV4s are less susceptible to theft, but unfortunately, this is not yet reflected in the figures. In 2025, 403 units of this model were stolen; the year before, 376 RAV4s were stolen. Second and third place go to the Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen Polo. Last year, 347 and 283 units of these cars were stolen, respectively. In total, 1,102 Toyotas and 1,008 Volkswagens were stolen.

Car thefts occurred most frequently in Eindhoven. In the North Brabant municipality, 710 cars were stolen last year. In Amsterdam, 503 cars were stolen, and in The Hague, 457 cars were taken.
