Renault car-sharing vehicles in Utrecht are already supplying electricity back to the grid, but soon you can also use your EV as a private individual for V2G. This will be possible with We Drive Solar charging stations.

Exactly one year ago, it was announced that Renaults in Utrecht would supply electricity back to the grid. This involves MyWheels car-sharing vehicles, with Renault working with We Drive Solar to utilize the V2G (Vehicle to Grid) technology in these cars for this purpose. It was also announced at the time that V2G should eventually also be possible for private individuals. Now, again on November 27, that has become concrete.

In the coming weeks, the V2G service developed by Renault and We Drive Solar will be rolled out, and private Renaults with a Solar Life charging station from We Drive Solar will be able to charge bidirectionally. This means that your car will automatically be charged as much as possible when the grid needs to be relieved and electricity is cheap, but it will give off electricity to the grid when there is demand for it. This should make charging cheaper and contribute to reducing grid congestion. You don’t have to worry that your car won’t be charged on time, because supplying electricity back only happens if there is room for it in the car’s charging schedule.

In the near future, early adopters will be able to try it out, and the service should be widely available in the first half of the new year. You will then need the aforementioned charging station and a Renault with a V2G on-board charger.
