RIVM sees potential in new fire extinguishing method for electric cars

Fire extinguishing water still provides a challenge

A new system for extinguishing electric cars that caught fire is promising according to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).

With the so-called ultra hic pressure cut and extinguishing system, the fire brigade can cut right through materials, so that the water can reach the burning battery. That turns out to work well, but there is still a major disadvantage: the fire extinguishing water becomes strongly polluted with heavy metals such as cobalt and nickel.

The RIVM therefore recommends that it develops the method. The collection of the extinguishing water must be investigated in more detail. “For example, dangerous situations for people and pollution of the environment can be prevented.”

Electric cars that catch fire are often difficult to extinguish. From the outside that hardly works. That is why the choice is now often to hoist the entire vehicle in a container with water, or to have it burned out in a controlled manner.
