Skoda surprises friend and foe with a practical electric coupe

Keep Dreaming

Skoda 1000 MBX 2025

Skoda places user-friendliness and interior space high on the priority list. Does a coupe really fit with that? Absolutely! This is the Skoda 1000 MBX. A coupe in Czech style and therefore nicely practical.

Skoda has difficulty letting go of the past. In 2021, it sketched a colorful collection of modern interpretations of past models, and this year the brand showed not only a modern version of the Favorit but also a 110R Coupé translated to the present. You can now add another one to that list. This is the Skoda 1000 MBX, but as it would look if it were to come to market today.

“What if one of Skoda’s rarest production cars were to be reborn as a model with Modern Solid design language?” – Skoda wonders. First of all: a 1000 MBX, what was that again? The 1000 MBX was the two-door ‘coupé version’ of the 1000 MB introduced in the 1960s, a compact four-door sedan. There was also a slightly more powerful sibling: the 1100 MBX based on the – you guessed it – 1100 MB, the more powerful sedan. Anyway: the 1000 MBX went into production at the end of 1966 and had a 988 cc small four-cylinder gasoline engine that produced a respectable 52 hp and 75 Nm at the time. Those over 50 horses only had to move 815 kg of Skoda. Of the 1000 MB and 1100 MB, as many as 443,141 units were built, while only 2,517 units of the coupé versions 1000 MBX and 1100 MBX were produced together.

Back to the present. The modern and of course electrically powered interpretation of the Skoda 1000 MBX is a 2+2 seater and has two rear seats with fold-up cushions. The space created by this should make it possible to carry items such as a bicycle and a large travel suitcase simultaneously. In the front, we find front seats that visually merge into a front bench. The 1000 MBX has air suspension and features two sliding doors on either side of its body. The body itself is in the form of a two-door sedan, and with that, we’ve covered the similarities with the original. According to Skoda, this 1000 MBX is therefore not a retro model.

Production plans seem – however regrettable – not to exist.
