The Suzuki Alto has not been around for over 10 years in Europe. Elsewhere, the model is still alive and with a new dose of zest for life, the current generation is allowed to take it again in Japan.
We peek across the border again to see what is happening there in the automotive area. We arrive in Japan, where the Suzuki Alto has been renewed. Before we take a look at that, we have to explain the current situation. The Suzuki Alto disappeared from the market in Europe in 2014 when the model took place for the Celerio. The Suzuki Celerio that is also no longer available, was actually the then current Indian (Maruti) Suzuki Alto, a model that had little to do with the Alto then available in Japan. That Suzuki Celerio – who had a Nissan brother in the form of the Pixo – had a simpler Alto in India at the time. The current generation of Suzuki Celerio has also called Alto’s alternative in India. The Alto sold in Japan is part of another bloodline and is a real KEI-Car. The angular and even somewhat retro-shaped eighth generation presented in 2014 made way in 2021 for a braver and precisely with rounded shapes. It is that poetic Alto – which also exists a Mazda version – that has now been refreshed.
Of course, the changes that Suzuki has implemented in his home country on the Alto are not. Even Suzuki speaks of ‘some changes’. Then you know that you have to search carefully. What is new: the cooling opening in the front bumper is no longer framed by a deeper ‘edge’ and between the headlights we find a grille that was not there before. From now on, every Suzuki Alto has a real spoiler at the top of the rear window. Suzuki also introduces new paint colors.
Nice crack and little consumption.
The Suzuki Alto always has a CVT in Japan and is there again with and without mild hybrid hardware. Both have a tiny 0.66 liter three -cylinder petrol engine. Regardless of the chosen motorcycle variant you can opt for front and four-wheel drive. The average consumption of the mild hybrid variant is only 3.5 l/100 km. The Alto costs at least € 6,745 in Japan. Fun fact: there is another Alto in Japan. It is called Alto Lapin and is also there as a nice Lapin LC.
