This car proves that the real Mercedes star is far from dead

Classic interpretation of modern grille

Mercedes Benz teaser

There’s no shortage of Mercedes stars on the brand’s modern cars, but the classic star on the nose is rarely seen anymore. However, this star is far from dead, as proven by this preview of a Mercedes-Benz concept car.

Hundreds of little stars in the grille, hundreds of little stars in the wheels, little stars in the headlights and little stars in the taillights: Mercedes is currently very lavish with its famous logo. The most striking of all these stars is still at the front, but in the vast majority of cases, Mercedes-Benz places that logo in the grille. This was different several decades ago, when the Mercedes star was still by definition on the nose of a Mercedes. This still exists, but you have to look harder for it. The S-Class has always maintained the classic grille with the ‘ornament’ (except for the S63…) and the EQS even got it with the facelift.

The electric GLC also features this ‘grille work’ in a rather prominent position.

Now we learn through the Instagram page of Mercedes’ design chief Gorden Wagener that the classic Mercedes star is far from dead. Wagener shows a dark image of what is most likely a new Mercedes concept car. This ‘Vision unknown’ gets a grille that resembles the very striking light show of the new electric GLC. The difference: this is a version with a separate star on the nose of the car. The grille itself runs all the way down to the bottom of the front bumper and is comparable in layout to the classic Mercedes-Benz grilles, although this example is clearly only functional for those who want to stand out more. The dark image doesn’t show much else of the car, but we believe we can conclude that it’s a low, elongated model. Perhaps a precursor to a future S-Class or GT-like model, which we’ll undoubtedly see more of soon.
