This lightweight electric sports coupe is the car Lotus should have made

Ready for Europe

JMEV SC01

MG is currently the only manufacturer offering a relatively affordable electric two-seater. A second one is coming, and it’s also Chinese. This is the SC01 that is coming to Europe. Good news: it’s lighter than the MG Cyberster. Much lighter!

Anyone who wants an electric sporty two-seater and doesn’t have the budget to shop in the supercar and hypercar class is dependent on the MG Cyberster in Europe. However, that 1,850 kg heavy roadster is not a lightweight. Lotus also has nothing to report in this segment. It has electric models, but the large and heavy Emeya and Eletre have nothing in common with a small two-seater. Soon, an electric two-seater will come to Europe that is a relatively lightweight. This is the SC01.

The SC01 is brand new to Europe but has existed longer in its home country, China. Indeed: the SC01 is also a Chinese car. It started its existence as a project of tuner Tianjin Gongjiang Pai Auto Technology and is marketed by the equally Chinese JMEV as SSC SC01, where SSC stands for Small Sports Car. The SC01 is 4.11 meters long, only 1.17 meters low, and weighs 1,365 kilograms. While that is much more than a 980 kg heavy Mazda MX-5, it is nicely hundreds of kilograms less than an MG Cyberster.

The SC01 is built around a lightweight tubular frame, has push-rod suspension, sits on lightweight magnesium wheels, and is lightning fast. The sports coupe has an NMC battery of about 60 kWh that powers two electric motors. Together, they are good for 435 hp and 560 Nm. With that, it zips from a standstill to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. The electric range is stated to be 435 kilometers according to the enthusiastic WLTC method.

In Europe, the SC01 will be launched in a limited edition of only 1,000 units. Prices are not yet available.
