De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump is druk bezig om het beleid van zijn voorganger uit te wissen. Nu moet er zelfs geheel een einde komen aan CO2-uitstooteisen en dat heeft potentieel grote gevolgen voor de auto-industrie en -verkoop.
Afgelopen voorjaar werd al duidelijk dat Trump een behoorlijk soepeler uitstootbeleid voor auto’s voor ogen heeft. Nu komt er echter nog een schepje bovenop. Onder Trump wordt de kijk op de effecten van CO2-uitstoot helemaal anders. Concreet betekent het dat CO2 juridisch gezien niet langer geldt als gevaarlijk voor de volksgezondheid en dat moet de weg vrijmaken om een streep te zetten door beperkingen op het gebied van CO2-uitstoot. Dat meldt Reuters.
CO2-uitstooteisen zijn er natuurlijk niet vanwege directe gevaren voor de volksgezondheid, maar vanwege de rol die CO2 volgens de wetenschap speelt bij klimaatverandering. Dat verandert echter niks aan het gevolg van deze zet van de regering Trump. De auto-industrie gaat dit natuurlijk merken. De baas van de EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) meldt al dat de EPA hierdoor geen basis meer heeft om CO2-uitstooteisen op te leggen aan autofabrikanten. Die komen hierdoor dus, als het allemaal doorgaat, te vervallen.
Er zijn al wat reacties op gekomen, onder meer vanuit Ford. Dat stelt dat de uitstooteisen die onder president Biden werden ingesteld, niet ‘in lijn met de markt’ waren. Tegelijkertijd laat Ford tussen neus en lippen door weten ook kritisch te zijn op wat er nu gebeurt: “De normen moeten in overeenstemming zijn met de wetenschap en de keuze van de klant, en steeds strenger worden om de CO2-uitstoot te verminderen, terwijl tegelijkertijd de Amerikaanse productie blijft groeien.”
Er is nu nog een zogenoemde ‘public comment period’, waarin er vanuit de bevolking gereageerd kan worden op dit plan. Dat duurt doorgaans zestig dagen. De EPA kan de zorgen die hierover geuit worden dan meenemen, al is het maar de vraag of het daar dan vervolgens nog iets mee kan of wil doen.

Specifically, it means that CO2 is no longer legally considered dangerous to public health, and that should pave the way to eliminating restrictions in the field of CO2 emissions. Reuters reports this.
CO2 emission requirements are of course not due to direct dangers to public health, but because of the role that CO2 plays in climate change according to science. However, that does not change the consequence of this move by the Trump administration. The automotive industry will naturally notice this. The head of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) already reports that the EPA no longer has a basis to impose CO2 emission requirements on car manufacturers. As a result, if it all goes through, they will be cancelled.
There have already been some reactions to it, including from Ford. It states that the emission requirements that were set under President Biden were not ‘in line with the market’. At the same time, Ford lets slip between the lines that it is also critical of what is happening now: “The standards must be in line with science and customer choice, and become increasingly strict to reduce CO2 emissions, while at the same time American production continues to grow.”
There is now a so-called ‘public comment period’ in which the public can respond to this plan. That usually lasts sixty days. The EPA can then take into account the concerns expressed about this, although it remains to be seen whether it can or wants to do anything with it afterwards.
