‘Worldwide Appeal’

Volkswagen has a brand new and quite practical model ready. It is called Volkswagen Tukan and will fly past the Dutch market without looking back.
Far outside the Netherlands, relatively compact pick-ups based on a passenger car are a thing. Think of the Hyundai Santa Cruz and the Ford Maverick, which are bought in the United States. In various South American countries, cars such as the Fiat Toro and Strada, Chevrolet Montana, and Volkswagen Saveiro have been indispensable from the middle to highest regions of the sales charts for years. Where the Saveiro is the Volkswagen alternative to the Fiat Strada, a completely new four-door model must join the battle with the Fiat Toro. Volkswagen is now sharing the name and a teaser photo of this newcomer.
The new relatively compact four-door pick-up will be the production version of the Volkswagen Tarok Concept shown in 2018. The model name Tarok didn’t make it. Volkswagen prefers to name its new potential success number after the cheerfully beaked tropical bird. Give Volkswagen a break. The tropical theme continues in the car’s color; Volkswagen do Brasil repeatedly states that the Tukan is ‘canary yellow’.
The Tukan will soon roll off the production line in São José dos Pinhais and is just one of 21 new or renewed models that Volkswagen will introduce in South America by 2028. The Tukan may also be introduced beyond that, as Volkswagen speaks of a ‘globally attractive’ model.
