Volkswagen Scirocco GT II (1989)

There was even a 1.3

Volkswagen Scirocco II

The second Volkswagen Scirocco arrived in 1981. That’s more than two years before the Golf II appeared. But like the Scirocco I, the second generation of the coupĂ© still relies on the first Golf. We are driving an early example, one with an 85 hp 1.6. Is the Scirocco still the powerful wind it is named after?

Take a look at the year of manufacture of this second-generation Scirocco: 1981. An early one, as this model came on the market that year, after its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Like the first Scirocco, number two is also on the platform of the Golf I. In length it grew eleven centimeters compared to its predecessor and the weight increased by more than fifty kilos. Height and width remained unchanged. There was also little innovation in terms of engines, until the 16V came on the market in 1985 (139 hp, 129 hp with catalytic converter). In those days, a sporty-looking car didn’t necessarily have to be lightning fast, as the engine range shows.

Entry-level even had a 1.3

The entry-level of the Scirocco range had an extremely modest 1.3 under the hood, the car we are driving has a 1.6 with 85 hp. That still doesn’t make it a speed monster, but the performance is not disappointing. Those old, eight-valve carburetor engines are not that crazy. The throttle response is good. No computer that first calculates what the ideal mixing ratio is, just step on the gas and go.

Light as a Volkswagen Up

The low weight also plays a role, of course. Because this Scirocco weighs as little as a Volkswagen Up and you notice that in everything. It comes off its spot relatively smoothly and also easily goes through a bend. And if you step on the 1.6, the four-cylinder produces a solid sound. The engine is linked to a 4+E gearbox. That E stands for economical and that fourth gear is longer than a normal fifth gear. And with this youngtimer it is also quite economical to drive. We have the pleasure of being able to go out with a GL and that is richly equipped by VW standards. The low mileage is also doubted by the provider, there are no booklets. The condition of the car is original.
