Tesla’s worldwide sales figures are falling, but not every market cools down. In fact, in Norway, Tesla sales rose by no less than 213 percent in May compared to the same month last year. How is that?
According to the Norwegian Road Traffic Information Council (OFV), 2,600 new Tesla’s were registered. The sharp increase is largely due to the introduction of the renewed model Y. That compact SUV remains popular and has been at the top of the sales lists for three years in a row.
In May the model Y had a market share of 16.5 percent – more than twice as much as the Toyota BZ4x (7 percent) and four times as much as the Volkswagen ID4 (4.2 percent). This once again made the model the best -selling car in the country.
The Norwegian car market as a whole grew by 39 percent compared to a year earlier, with the vast majority of the newly sold cars being completely electric. Nine out of ten newcomers are now driving there without a combustion engine.
Electric driving in an oil state
It remains striking that Norway, one of the world’s largest oil exporters, is at the forefront of electric mobility. But the country has had an active incentive policy for years: buyers of electric cars benefit from tax benefits, lower tolls and access to an extensive loading network.
Despite the cold climate – a challenge for battery performance – the switch to electric driving seems to succeed here.
Why do Norwegian choose Tesla?
That Tesla is doing well in Norway is partly due to Christina BU of the Norwegian EV-Association Neva to the recent price campaigns of the car manufacturer. “The Tesla Model Y has a good price-quality ratio and meets Norwegian needs: a large luggage space, high ground clearance, four-wheel drive and a towbar,” she told the American broadcaster CNBC.
Because in recent research among Norwegian car owners, no less than 43 percent said not to buy Tesla for political reasons, the increase is extra remarkable. “So we can only speculate how much Tesla would have sold without the support of CEO Elon Musk to the Maga movement and the Trump government,” said BU.
France and Sweden: sharp decrease
In other European countries it is less well with Tesla. In neighboring Sweden, Tesla’s sale fell by 54 percent to 503 cars. In France it went down even faster, with a decrease from 67 percent to 721 copies. Last month the Tesla sales in Europe halved on average compared to a year earlier.
Buyers are disappointed because they believe that Tesla’s facelifts of the Model 3 and Model Y do not go far enough.
But also the declining Merk Imago and the public aversion to CEO Musk, with his role in American politics and support for right -wing political parties such as the German AfD, Tesla are troubling. In a poll in March, 94 percent of the Germans indicated that they would never buy a Tesla.
