Xpeng G6: electric SUV also gets a petrol engine

Charging and thus with smaller battery

Xpeng G6 and P7+ Range Extended EREV

The Xpeng G6 is an electric SUV that – you wouldn’t expect it – only comes with electric powertrains. Until now! The Xpeng G6 is getting a version with a gasoline engine!

Xpeng positions itself as a brand that only sells fully electric cars. It has never delivered cars with hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrains, but that is changing. Both the Xpeng G6 available here and the P7+ coming to our side later will get – at least in home country China – versions with a gasoline engine. However, these new variants are not powered by the combustion engine. AutoWeek has uncovered the first photos and information of this new duo from the database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The Xpeng G6 and P7+ with gasoline engine are so-called EREVs, Extended Range Electric Vehicles. Essentially plug-in hybrids then. The gasoline engine that the duo gets serves purely for generating energy for the battery pack. In the case of the Xpeng G6 and P7+, that gasoline engine is a 150 hp powerful 1.5 from the Chinese Harbin Dongan Automobile Power. How big the battery is, we don’t know yet. Recently, Xpeng announced a version of the G7 with a combustion engine. That one has a 55.7 kWh battery, while the regular electric versions without combustion engine have a 68.5 kWh or 80.8 kWh battery. In the Netherlands, the G6 also has those batteries, so we suspect that the Xpeng G6 with gasoline engine will also get that smaller 55.7 kWh battery.
