Tens of Thousands of Cars
Stellantis, the parent company of brands like Fiat, Opel, and Peugeot, must recall tens of thousands of cars in the Netherlands again. This time, it’s diesel engines that can fail.
Across Europe, it concerns more than a million cars equipped with a so-called 1.5 BlueHDi engine. These engines may have a problem with the camshaft chain, causing it to wear out too quickly. The garage will check whether the camshaft chain needs to be replaced. A software update will also follow, and the oil may be replaced.
In total, it concerns 24,000 cars from five brands built between October 2017 and January 2023: Peugeot, Opel, Citroën, Fiat, and DS. In total, it concerns 34 different models. “A small number of cars are already being recalled from today,” says Jeroen Maas, spokesperson for Stellantis. “This concerns the oldest models that are most at risk. After the summer, around October, the rest will follow.”
Compensation for More Car Owners
Due to the problems, Stellantis has decided to reimburse the expenses for owners of more affected cars. This concerns cars that are a maximum of ten years old or have up to 240,000 kilometers on the odometer. “The recall is free of charge for anyone who has a car that falls within these frameworks,” says Maas.
Customers who had to have repairs done between early 2023 and the end of June 2025 that are related to the engine problem can also apply for compensation. A compensation platform will be set up in mid-July, where owners can also go for questions. The Belgian branch of Stellantis has posted a press release online about the recall.
No Injuries or Deaths Due to Engine Problem
Spokesperson Maas emphasizes that this is a precautionary measure. “No accidents are known, let alone injuries as a result of a broken engine.” Because relatively few diesels have been sold in the Netherlands in recent years, the numbers are not too bad, but in other countries, the numbers are much larger. In Belgium, it concerns approximately 117,000 diesel cars, and in France, as many as 636,000 vehicles.
This is the third time that Stellantis has come up with extensive and far-reaching recalls. Previously, there was also compensation for problems with PureTech engines. And a few weeks ago, it was announced that 33,260 Dutch owners of a Citroën C3 or DS3 with a defective Takata airbag are advised not to use their car anymore.
