The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been in production since 1979, but in recent years things have really accelerated. There is another production milestone, the last one was in 2023.
It’s been 46 years since the very first Mercedes-Benz G-Class rolled off the production line. Since then, 600,000 have been built, Mercedes-Benz proudly announces. The 600,000th example was recently assembled. That is a fully electric Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology.
Who would have ever expected in 1979 that the G-Class would one day be fully electric. It’s all possible thanks to the generation change, which took place in 2018. Then the G-Class, which had been developed since 1979, passed the baton to a completely new one, which is still strikingly similar in appearance to the original G-Class. Especially in this retro look.

This is how it all started, in the late 70s.
Since the arrival of the current Mercedes-Benz G-Class, things have moved very quickly for the model. In 2023, the 500,000th example was built and in 2020 the 400,000th. Just imagine: 200,000 in about five years, while the first 400,000 took no less than 41 years. Of the 600,000 units built, a total of just over 4,000 have been registered in the Netherlands. At least, on civilian registration. The considerable fleet of military G-Classes may not yet be included.
