The new generation of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, still one of the best-selling delivery vans in the Netherlands, will only be presented next year. But gradually, more and more is becoming known about the innovations.
It is now clear that the new Sprinter will offer more cargo space. It will be slightly taller than the current model and the walls are more upright, resulting in an even more rectangular cargo area. The new Sprinter is reported getting a particularly thick nose, similar to how the latest Renault Master has a striking front. The relatively long engine hood is positioned relatively high. The manufacturer wants to give the delivery of a much more rugged appearance with this.
The designers lifted a corner of the veil last week by presenting a sculpture that somewhat reveals the contours of the new Sprinter. The sculpted vehicle is 650 centimeters long, 275 centimeters high and 250 centimeters wide, but of course the new generation of Sprinters will be available in many types and sizes. And just like with the current generation, buyers will have the choice between fully electric drive or conventional combustion engines.
Electronics
In the vehicle, a significant step forward in electronics is expected. For example, the new Sprinter will get the operating system and user interface that also characterize the current generation of Mercedes passenger cars. The delivery vans will then remain up-to-date for years thanks to over-the-air updates.
In combination with a large central screen, in the middle of the dashboard, the infotainment will work faster and offer many more possibilities. For the first time, the planning and navigation software of major customers, such as courier services and logistics companies, can be integrated into the vehicle’s infotainment. Drivers therefore no longer need to use an external device from their company to perform their daily trips as efficiently as possible.
Mercedes has already announced that the new infotainment also makes it possible to inform the driver more precisely about the expected range of the electric versions. Quite important when you need to deliver an order to the customer on time. But when asked, the manufacturer states that it does not take into account the quantity and particularly the weight of the cargo in the cargo area. And that can of course have a major impact on the range of an electric car.
Success story
When the Sprinter was introduced in 1995, it was the first large delivery van from Mercedes-Benz in the light segment up to 3.5 tons. The Mercedes nowadays consistently ranks in the top three of best-selling delivery vans in the Netherlands. About three-quarters of the vehicles are customized and outfitted for the customer.
The loyalty among Sprinter buyers is high. Almost 8 out of 10 customers choose a Sprinter again when purchasing a next delivery van.
