Skoda 100 revives as a hypermodern sedan

Back to the Eastern Bloc

Skoda 100 concept

Skoda has been proving lately that even the uninspired creations from the Eastern Bloc can still lead to something creative. Now it has spectacularly revived the Skoda 100.

Skoda has recently gotten a taste for all sorts of retro creations. It delves into its distant past for some inspiration and brings out a contemporary interpretation according to its latest design language. Recently, Skoda showed the reincarnation of the 1000 MB, earlier there was also the modern 110R and the Favorit, which is probably more familiar to many, has also been featured. Now it is the turn of the Skoda 100/110.

You don’t have to look twice at this new concept car to see parallels with the 1000 MBX from last month. Not surprising, because the source of inspiration, the Skoda 100, was the successor to the 1000 MB at the time. Yet Skoda has really written the retro story a little differently this time. Where the reincarnation of the 1000 MB was a coupe, we now see a fairly large sedan. A much statelier study model, which according to creator Martin Paclt follows the proportions of the Superb.

The external similarities with the original are not very obvious this time either, but there are some nice details to see. For example, there are subtle air intakes on the flanks at the rear, roughly where the catches were on the original. After all, the engine was located in the back. We also see a grille under the taillights, just like the 100 had. A particularly idiosyncratic detail is that there is no rear window, but an extra air scoop that protrudes above the roof. A touch of Formula 1, you might almost say.

The designer next to the original

Nice and nice again, but what do we have to gain from this? Well, in this case it is purely fun viewing material again. This whole series of retro study models is nothing more than a fun exercise for Skoda’s designers. It is a bit of a missed opportunity if Skoda does absolutely nothing with the well-liked retro elements of these concept cars. Who knows, you might see some of it back on a production car in the distant future.
