Despite campaigns, checks, and hefty penalties, many people still drive under (too much) influence. Last year, significantly more such offenses were detected.

In the past year, nearly 48,000 drivers were caught driving under the influence. This is an increase of no less than 12.4 percent, according to Autoverzekering.nl, based on figures from the police and CBS. This includes alcohol, medicine, and drug use behind the wheel.

There has been an upward trend in recent years. For example, ten years earlier, 26,716 cases were registered, in 2022 it exceeded 43,000, and in 2025 there were exactly 47,870. Most of these offenses were detected in North Holland, South Holland, and North Brabant.
