‘Porsche is considering scrapping electric 718 Boxster and Cayman to save money’

Porsche has seen better times. It is forced to hold back on spending, and this may have consequences for the arrival of the electric Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Spider. Porsche is reportedly considering halting the development of these two models.

Porsche, like many other car brands, fully committed to the development of electric models a few years ago. This costs a lot of money, but the returns are disappointing. Electric models are not selling as well as the brand had hoped, with the result that Porsche announced in September 2025 that it would also develop new models with internal combustion engines. For example, the Cayenne and Macan with internal combustion engines have a future, and a 718 family with petrol engines will simply exist alongside the announced electric variants. What now appears is that those electric variants might not even arrive.

Based on insiders at Porsche, the normally well-informed Automotive News writes that the electric 718 Boxster and 718 Spider are on the chopping block. The freshly appointed CEO Michael Leiters is reportedly considering scrapping the electric 718 models. The argument would be that their development is taking too long and costs are escalating. A final decision has reportedly not yet been made.
