Liever lui dan moe? Dan is deze Volkswagen ID Buzz AD misschien wel de ideale ‘auto’ voor jou en je familie of vriendengroep. De ID Buzz AD kan namelijk helemaal zelf rijden en is dus volledig autonoom. Kan, inderdaad. Of het ook mag, is een ander verhaal.
Een aantal jaar geleden lanceerden leken autofabrikanten van mening te zijn dat autonoom rijden het helemaal zou worden. We kregen de ene na de andere concept-car met inschuifbaar of volledig weg te klappen voorgeschoteld, al dan niet met een lekker lounge-achtig interieur. De aandacht ligt nu vooral elders, maar niet bij Volkswagen. Dat is de afgelopen jaren namelijk stug doorgegaan met het ontwikkelen van zijn volledig autonome variant van de ID Buzz. Die heet voluit Volkswagen ID Buzz AD en is nu klaar voor productie.
De Volkswagen ID Buzz AD is niet door Volkswagen, maar door dochterbedrijf Moia gepresenteerd. Moia houdt zich vooral bezig met de ontwikkeling van connectiviteit en car-sharing-achtige mobiliteitsoplossingen. Daar hoort ook de ontwikkeling van een autonome ID Buzz bij. De Volkswagen ID Buzz AD is dan ook (nog) niet voor de particulier bedoeld, voor de zelfrijdende bus is namelijk een toekomst weggelegd in mobiliteitsdiensten.
De ID Buzz AD is volgestopt met software en hardware van Mobileye, een pakket technologie dat de elektrische personenbus zelfstandig zijn weg door het verkeer laat vinden. Ook zit de Volkswagen ID Buzz AD volgens zijn scheppers vol met AI. Die kunstmatige intelligentie wordt onder meer gebruikt om ‘passagiers automatisch te assisteren, wagenparken te beheren en de diensten te integreren in booking-apps’, zo lezen we.
De Volkswagen ID Buzz AD mag nog niet overal zonder bestuurder rondrijden, al heeft Volkswagen wel plannen om de bus te certificeren in zowel de Verenigde Staten als Europese Unie. De Volkswagen ID Buzz AD is volgehangen met camera’s en sensoren. Die zijn rondom de auto bus duidelijk zichtbaar. Ook kun je niet om de grote module heen die Moia op het dak heeft geplaatst. In de ID Buzz AD zien we onder meer een houten vloertje, een opbergvak voor bagage, extra handgrepen én een knoppeneiland voor de passagiers met onder meer een start- en stopknop én knoppen voor hulp en om de bus direct tot stilstand te brengen.

Rather lazy than tired? Then this Volkswagen ID Buzz AD might be the ideal ‘car’ for you and your family or group of friends. The ID Buzz AD can drive completely on its own and is therefore fully autonomous. Can, indeed. Whether it is allowed, is another matter.
A few years ago, lay car manufacturers seemed to believe that autonomous driving would be the next big thing. We were presented with one concept car after another with retractable or fully folding dashboards, whether or not with a nice lounge-like interior. The attention is now mainly elsewhere, but not at Volkswagen. In recent years, it has been stubbornly continuing to develop its fully autonomous variant of the ID Buzz. It is called Volkswagen ID Buzz AD and is now ready for production.
The Volkswagen ID Buzz AD was not presented by Volkswagen, but by subsidiary Moia. Moia is mainly involved in the development of connectivity and car-sharing-like mobility solutions. This also includes the development of an autonomous ID Buzz. The Volkswagen ID Buzz AD is therefore not (yet) intended for the private individual, because the self-driving bus has a future in mobility services.
The ID Buzz AD is packed with software and hardware from Mobileye, a technology package that allows the electric passenger bus to independently find its way through traffic. According to its creators, the Volkswagen ID Buzz AD is also full of AI. This artificial intelligence is used, among other things, to ‘automatically assist passengers, manage fleets and integrate the services into booking apps,’ we read.
The Volkswagen ID Buzz AD is not yet allowed to drive around everywhere without a driver, although Volkswagen does have plans to certify the bus in both the United States and the European Union. The Volkswagen ID Buzz AD is loaded with cameras and sensors. These are clearly visible around the car bus. You also can’t ignore the large module that Moia has placed on the roof. In the ID Buzz AD we see, among other things, a wooden floor, a storage compartment for luggage, extra handles and a button island for the passengers with, among other things, a start and stop button and buttons for help and to bring the bus to a direct stop.
