No Legal Basis for Driving Ban
The Inspectorate for Living Environment and Transport (ILT) says it cannot prohibit anyone from taking to the road with Citroëns for which a recall applies due to dangerous airbags.
Automotive group Stellantis made an urgent appeal to users of thousands of Citroëns not to use their cars until a defect in the airbags has been fixed. But this remains on a voluntary basis and the ILT, as a market supervisor, cannot prohibit people from continuing to drive their cars, says a spokesperson.
Recalls are the responsibility of car manufacturers themselves and the ILT supervises this. The ILT advises owners of other car brands to check via the RDW website whether their car is also subject to a recall. In recent years, manufacturers worldwide have already recalled millions of cars due to problems with airbags from Takata. Due to problems with the propellant, these can explode, causing metal parts to fly around.
