7:46,13 op Nordschleife
De Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 is de snelste productie-Golf ooit op de Nordschleife en om dat te vieren staat hij vandaag te shinen bij de aftrap van de 24-uurs race van de Nürburgring. Dat hij zelfs de Golf R achter zich laat, dankt hij aan de nodige aanpassingen. Zo heeft de op de GTI Clubsport (niet hier leverbaar) gebaseerde Edition 50 325 pk in plaats van de 300 die de tot nu krachtigste GTI op de voorwielen loslaat. De Edition 50 komt er aan omdat in 2026 de Golf GTI 50 jaar bestaat. Begin 2026 wordt hij leverbaar, ook in Nederland.
Dat hij in ons land in de prijslijst belandt is opmerkelijk aangezien je de GTI Clubsport daarin niet aantreft. Maar een feestje laat je als importeur natuurlijk niet schieten en daarom komt de GTI Edition 50 wel onze kant op. Om de vijf jaar verschijnt er een extra gepeperde Golf GTI om een jubileum te vieren. Soms doet de Nederlandse importeur er zelfs een schepje bovenop, zoals in 2001 het geval was met de GTI Edition 25. Die GTI leverde in Nederland 210 pk, terwijl de ’25 Jahre’ met een 180 pk sterke 1.8 20V Turbo de fabriek verliet.
Seconde sneller
Vijfentwintig jaar later levert de snelste Golf GTI 325 pk. Andere mapping van de 2.0 TSI levert 25 pk extra op, het koppel neemt toe tot 420 Nm, waarmee de voorwielen het dus nog zwaarder hebben. Een difflock op de vooras en, indien je het GTI Performance Pack bestelt, ook nog semi-slicks van Bridgestone zorgen ervoor dat de Edition 50 het allemaal nog kwijt kan ook. Met de rondetijd van 7:46 op de Nordschleife is de voorwielaandrijver in elk geval een seconde sneller dan de Golf R op het legendarische stuk asfalt in de Eifel. Met dezelfde man achter het stuur, Benjamin Leuchter, ging de feestversie ter ere van 20 jaar Golf R, bijna drie jaar geleden in 7 minuten en 47 seconden over de meer dan 20 kilometer lange Nordschleife. Die vierwielaangedreven R leverde 333 pk, wat sinds de facelift van vorig jaar het standaard vermogen is van de Golf 8,5 R.
Volgens Leuchter doet de GTI Edition 50 qua karakter denken aan de Golf GTI Clubsport S. Dat is een van de extreemste voorwielaangedreven Golfs ooit, als S had die versie geen achterbank en een stang tussen de achterste wielkasten.
De GTI Edition 50 staat 5 mm lager boven het asfalt dan de GTI Clubsport, wat de totale verlaging ten opzichte van een standaard-Golf op 20 mm brengt. Bij het Performance-pakket zit behalve de Bridgestone Potenza Race semislicks (breedtemaat 235) ook een titanium uitlaatsysteem van Akrapovic zodat de nodige DSG-plofjes en prutteltjes wel hoorbaar zullen zijn. Wat de GTI Edition 50 op de stopwatch zet in rechte lijn is nog niet bekend. Een GTI Clubsport kan echter in 5,6 seconden van 0 naar 100 km/h en loopt 267 km/h als je de begrenzer laat verwijderen.
Eerste kwartaal 2026
Eind 2025 begint de productie van de GTI Edition 50, in het eerste kwartaal van 2026 krijgen de eerste kopers hun auto. Da’s best vroeg want de eerste Golf GTI kwam pas na de zomer van 1976 op de markt. Er zijn vijf kleuren waaruit je kunt kiezen. Pure wit, Moonstone grijs, Grenadilla zwart en de twee exlusieve Edition 50-lakken Dark Moss groen en Tornado rood. Op en in de auto zie je Edition 50-logo’s. Heb je dan de snelste hete hatchback (waarvan er helaas nog maar weinig over zijn)? Nee, de Honda Civic Type R doet een rondje Nordschleife met de juiste persoon achter het stuur in 7:44. Maar het goede nieuws voor de Edition 50: die gaat eruit! De Ultimate Edition van die doorgesnoven Japanse hatchback kost meer dan €90.000. Wat de GTI Edition 50 moet kosten is nog niet bekend. Een Golf R kost bijna €85.000, een GTI met 265 pk kost dik €63.000
7:46.13 on the Nordschleife
The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 is the fastest production Golf ever on the Nordschleife, and to celebrate, it’s shining today at the kickoff of the Nürburgring 24-hour race. The fact that it even leaves the Golf R behind is thanks to the necessary adjustments. For example, the Edition 50, based on the GTI Clubsport (not available here), has 325 hp instead of the 300 that the most powerful GTI to date unleashes on the front wheels. The Edition 50 is coming because the Golf GTI will be 50 years old in 2026. It will be available in early 2026, also in the Netherlands.
The fact that it ends up in the price list in our country is remarkable since you will not find the GTI Clubsport in it. But as an importer, you naturally don’t want to miss a party, and that is why the GTI Edition 50 is coming our way. Every five years, an extra spicy Golf GTI appears to celebrate an anniversary. Sometimes the Dutch importer even goes one step further, as was the case in 2001 with the GTI Edition 25. That GTI delivered 210 hp in the Netherlands, while the ’25 Jahre’ left the factory with a 180 hp 1.8 20V Turbo.
Second faster
Twenty-five years later, the fastest Golf GTI delivers 325 hp. Different mapping of the 2.0 TSI delivers an extra 25 hp, the torque increases to 420 Nm, which makes things even more difficult for the front wheels. A diff lock on the front axle and, if you order the GTI Performance Pack, also Bridgestone semi-slicks ensure that the Edition 50 can still handle it all. With a lap time of 7:46 on the Nordschleife, the front-wheel drive is in any case one second faster than the Golf R on the legendary stretch of asphalt in the Eifel. With the same man behind the wheel, Benjamin Leuchter, the anniversary version in honor of 20 years of Golf R, almost three years ago, went over the more than 20 kilometer long Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 47 seconds. That four-wheel drive R delivered 333 hp, which has been the standard power of the Golf 8.5 R since last year’s facelift.
According to Leuchter, the GTI Edition 50 is reminiscent in character of the Golf GTI Clubsport S. That is one of the most extreme front-wheel drive Golfs ever; as an S, that version had no rear seat and a bar between the rear wheel arches.
The GTI Edition 50 is 5 mm lower above the asphalt than the GTI Clubsport, which brings the total reduction compared to a standard Golf to 20 mm. In addition to the Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slicks (width 235), the Performance package also includes an Akrapovic titanium exhaust system so that the necessary DSG pops and burbles will be audible. What the GTI Edition 50 puts on the stopwatch in a straight line is not yet known. However, a GTI Clubsport can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and runs 267 km/h if you have the limiter removed.
First quarter of 2026
Production of the GTI Edition 50 will start at the end of 2025, and the first buyers will receive their car in the first quarter of 2026. That’s quite early because the first Golf GTI only came onto the market after the summer of 1976. There are five colors to choose from. Pure white, Moonstone gray, Grenadilla black and the two exclusive Edition 50 paints Dark Moss green and Tornado red. You can see Edition 50 logos on and in the car. Do you then have the fastest hot hatchback (of which there are unfortunately few left)? No, the Honda Civic Type R does a lap of the Nordschleife with the right person behind the wheel in 7:44. But the good news for the Edition 50: it’s going out! The Ultimate Edition of that snorting Japanese hatchback costs more than €90,000. What the GTI Edition 50 should cost is not yet known.
