Volkswagen Passat is not nearly ready after 37 years – Enthusiast

Rare and Tidy

Volkswagen Passat

It is unpretentious, neat and rare. Yes, this 1988 Volkswagen Passat hatchback strikes a chord with us. Now all that’s needed is to find someone who is willing to pay just under six grand for it.

The second generation of the Volkswagen Passat has largely disappeared from our country. Maybe you’ll have more luck spotting one in more easterly regions, but here it’s difficult, with only about 100 remaining with a valid MOT. If you want to drive one yourself, it becomes even more complicated. Try to find one for sale, let alone a Passat that still looks good. Do we meet you in that search? Then stop searching, because here we have the Passat B2 for you.

In Lemmer, Friesland, is this very ‘late’ Passat hatchback, built in 1988. In that year, the B2 handed over the baton to the almost extinct B3. That it is a B2 of the last generation can be seen, among other things, by its thicker bumpers, the horizontally oriented taillights and the grille that extends to the top of the nose. Furthermore, it is still clearly a car that had its base many years ahead of it. Especially the large overhangs were characteristic of the larger cars of the Volkswagen Group for a long time and also belonged to the Audi 80 base from the late 70s on which the Passat B2 stood.

Volkswagen Passat

Different times, as is also apparent from the engine. In the nose is a 75 hp 1.6 with carburetor, from which you should not expect miracles in terms of performance. However, it is a power source that you don’t just bring to an end, especially if it has only 66,000 km behind it. That is the case with this Passat, which also only had one previous private owner. That also explains its neat condition. The seller is honest enough to show some rust spots on the Passat, although they do not look too worrying. Whether it is worth the asking price of €5,999 after all? A fan will have to decide that.
