Alfa Romeo scraps competitor BMW X5: ‘Not our territory’

Size is relative

Alfa Romeo Stelvio Larson

Alfa Romeo was supposed to come with an SUV that would be positioned above the Stelvio. Was supposed to, indeed. It appears that this large Alfa Romeo is not coming at all anymore.

In mid-2022, then Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato stated in an interview with AutoWeek that Alfa Romeo would set its sights on what the executive called ‘the most profitable segments’. With this, Imparato was referring to the segment of substantial SUVs like the BMW X5 and the class of flagship sedans like the BMW 7-series. Since October 2024, Santo Ficili has been on the Alfa throne and he thinks quite differently about the future of Alfa Romeo.

In conversation with Automotive News, Santo Ficili states that ‘large models are not the territory of Alfa Romeo’. This makes it very unlikely that the Italian brand will come with anything larger than the next generation Giulia and Stelvio, models that will undoubtedly grow another step during an upcoming generation change.
