The number of public charging points for electric cars has more than tripled in the past five years. This is evident from an analysis by the ANP of figures from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).

In 2025, there were almost 210,000 such charging points in the Netherlands. These are public points for charging a hybrid or electric car. The figure consists of public, semi-public, and fast-charging points. Public chargers are located along public roads, while semi-public ones are on private property. Examples include charging points in a parking garage or on a business park. Fast-charging points fully charge a car battery in a short time.

A year earlier, there were still around 181,000. Five years ago, in 2020, there were approximately 63,000 public charging points for electric cars.

In almost all municipalities, there are now more public charging stations than a year earlier. This number decreased in only 38 municipalities, including Hilversum, where 216 charging points have disappeared. Similar to 2024, most charging points are located in Amsterdam, with around 16,000. Rotterdam follows with over 11,000 charging points.

The increase in the number of charging points can be explained by the growing number of fully and partially electric cars in the Netherlands. In 2025, there were almost 1.2 million, compared to just over 270,000 five years prior.

The RVO has been registering the figures since 2019. Since then, an average of almost 35,000 public charging points have been added annually. The government aims to encourage more environmentally friendly driving. Owners of an electric car will receive several tax benefits until 2030, when all new passenger cars introduced to the market must be electric, including discounts on purchase tax and road tax.
